How Do Nevada Taxes Compare to Other States?

Nevada does not have an individual income tax. Nevada does not have a traditional corporate income tax but does impose a gross receipts tax. Nevada has a 6.85 percent state sales tax rate and an average combined state and local sales tax rate of 8.24 percent. Nevada has a 0.50 percent effective property tax rate on owner-occupied housing value. Nevada does not have an estate tax or inheritance tax. Nevada’s statewide gas tax is 23.81 cents per gallon, and the state also allows counties to levy local option gas taxes that can substantially increase the total state and local gas tax burden. Nevada’s cigarette excise tax is $1.80 per pack of 20 cigarettes.

Nevada raises tax revenue primarily through general sales taxes (45.3 percent of total state and local tax revenue), other taxes (32.6 percent), and property taxes (22.1 percent). Nevada collects $6,365 in state and local tax collections per capita, carries $7,055 in state and local debt per capita, and has an 86 percent funded ratio of public pension plans.
