Monday Map: Changes in State Tax Collections Per Capita, 2001-2011

Today’s Monday Map looks at state taxA tax is a mandatory payment or charge collected by local, state, and national governments from individuals or businesses to cover the costs of general government services, goods, and activities. collections – over the past decade, which states have increased the amount they collect per person, and which states have decreased it? Alaska comes in with the highest increase – a 167.59% increase in real tax collections per capita (though it’s worth pointing out that most of this is not paid by Alaska residents). Georgia is at the other end – for each resident, the state collects 25% less in real dollars than it did ten years earlier.
