Antiwar Protestors Seek to Shut Down the IRS

1 min readBy: Gerald Prante

It appears as if the antiwar left and the the supporters of the FairTax have something they agree on: both want to shut down the IRS. Today’s Washington Post reports that antiwar protestors plan to march all over Washington, including the offices of the Internal Revenue Service, to mark the 5th anniversary of the beginning of the conflict in Iraq.

Assuming their logic is that the government needs revenue to pay for the war in the Iraq, they may also want to march a few blocks farther west along Constitution Ave. to shut down the Federal Reserve, because most large-scale military conflicts throughout history have been deficit-financed. And one can possibly make a benefit-principle justification for deficit financing of wars because future generations would theoretically benefit from a victory in a current-year conflict. (That is assuming the benefits outweigh the costs of the conflict in the first place.)
