The IRS announced this week that it is seeking volunteers to make recommendations for improving IRS services. The Taxpayer Advocacy Panel (TAP), established in 2002, allows members to “give the IRS insights from every corner of our nation, helping the agency in its continuous effort to improve tax administration,” according to IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman.

TAP membership requires being a U.S. citizen, being current with all federal taxA tax is a mandatory payment or charge collected by local, state, and national governments from individuals or businesses to cover the costs of general government services, goods, and activities. obligations, being able to devote 300 to 500 hours over the course of the year, and being able to pass a FBI criminal background check. Terms last for 3 years, and begin in December 2012. Additionally, there are alternate member positions available.

According to TAP’s latest annual report, in 2010 the committee “reviewed 605 suggestions and issues presented by taxpayers at Town Hall Meetings, Tax Forums, the TAP toll-free line, improveirs.org, and other venues.” Of these 605 suggestions and issues, 101 of them were pursued by TAP, and 30 were eventually approved by the IRS.

Those interested in serving on the TAP should submit their application by April 27. Applications are available online at www.improveirs.org.
