Federal Tax Policy Fellow

Position Summary

The Tax Foundation federal tax policy fellow applies academic training in economics or a related field to analyze federal tax policies, working closely with the federal tax policy team to understand and use Tax Foundation’s body of research and tools including the Taxes and Growth (TAG) model. The position is part-time and meant to be filled by an undergraduate or graduate student seeking to connect their academic research to current federal tax policy issues.

Vice President of Federal Tax Policy & Stephen J. Entin Fellow in Economics

Essential Functions

  • Learn key skills in tax policy analysis by working with Tax Foundation experts, completing a curriculum comprised of important tax research, joining regular policy discussion groups, participating in trainings focused on tax and economic modeling basics as well as the specifics of the TAG model, and joining regular modeling meetings
  • Assist Tax Foundation experts by helping with research projects, publications, and model development
  • Follow current policy debates and identify topics to research
  • Participate in conferences, Capitol Hill hearings and briefings, and other events focused on federal tax policy
  • Use the TAG model to analyze tax policy proposals
  • Write blog posts and white papers

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers.

This is largely a sedentary role. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is an hourly position supported by grant funding. Tax Foundation’s office days and hours are Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m and Friday 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The incumbent will work with the supervisor to set a regular schedule of hours compatible with the Tax Foundation office schedule.

Minimum Education, Experience or Qualifications

  • Undergraduate training in economics or related quantitative discipline
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Data analysis skills and proficiency in Excel or data analysis software

Preferred Education, Experience or Qualifications

  • Graduate training in economics or related quantitative discipline
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Data analysis skills and proficiency in Excel or data analysis software 
  • Proficiency in a programming language
  • Experience with large software projects
  • Experience in economic modeling and building quantitative tools for policy analysis
