When Will Tax Freedom Day Be this Year?
March 23, 2011
We will soon announce the date of Tax Freedom Day 2011, the day on which Americans will have earned enough money to pay all their tax bills for the year at the federal, state and local level. Tax Freedom Day® is a vivid, calendar-based illustration of government’s cost, and it gives Americans an easy way to gauge the overall tax take.
Every year the Tax Freedom Day announcement is widely anticipated, and we receive numerous emails and phone calls from people eager to know the date. We will let everyone on our email list know immediately when the report is published. If you’d like to be among the first to read it, sign up for one of our email lists, either our regular weekly newsletter or the one-time announcement of Tax Freedom Day.
Tax Freedom Day was created by Florida businessman Dallas Hostetler in 1948. He performed the calculation himself and promoted his copyrighted concept until his retirement in 1971. He deeded the intellectual property to us, and since then we have used historical data to calculate Tax Freedom Day back to the beginning of the 20th century. In 1990 sufficient data became available to calculate a separate Tax Freedom Day for each state.
