Sales Tax Rates in America’s Largest Cities July 21, 2015 Jared Walczak Jared Walczak With Chicago set to impose the highest combined sales tax rate of any major city as of January 2016, many people want to know how their city ranks. Last week, I set out a list of the 15 cities with the top sales tax rates, but many of these cities are on the small side: Birmingham and Mobile, for instance. Not until Seattle, with the seventh-highest rate among American cities, does one encounter a city that ranks in the top 100 by population. It seemed worthwhile, therefore, to take a second look, this time limiting the scope to America's 50 largest cities, with populations ranging from 384,000 (New Orleans) to 8.5 million (New York City). Of America's most populous cities, the following impose the highest combined state and local sales tax rates: Seattle, WA – 9.6% Oakland, CA – 9.5% Chicago, IL – 9.25% (10.25% as of Jan. 1, 2016) Memphis, TN – 9.25% Nashville, TN – 9.25% Los Angeles, CA – 9.0% Long Beach, CA – 9.0% New Orleans, LA – 9.0% New York, NY – 8.88% San Jose, CA – 8.75% (tie) San Francisco, CA – 8.75% (tie) And here are the sales tax rates in the top 50 cities, ordered by population. Ranks are for these cities only: LOCALITY SALES TAX RATE City State State County City Total Rank New York New York 4.00% 0.00% 4.88% 8.88% 9 Los Angeles California 6.50% 2.25% 0.25% 9.00% 6 Chicago Illinois 6.25% 1.75% 1.25% 9.25% 3 Houston Texas 6.25% 1.00% 1.00% 8.25% 17 Philadelphia Pennsylvania 6.00% 0.00% 2.00% 8.00% 27 Phoenix Arizona 5.60% 0.70% 2.00% 8.30% 16 San Antonio Texas 6.25% 0.75% 1.25% 8.25% 17 San Diego California 6.50% 1.25% 0.25% 8.00% 27 Dallas Texas 6.25% 1.00% 1.00% 8.25% 17 San Jose California 6.50% 1.75% 0.50% 8.75% 10 Austin Texas 6.25% 1.00% 1.00% 8.25% 17 Jacksonville Florida 6.00% 1.00% 0.00% 7.00% 40 San Francisco California 6.50% 2.00% 0.25% 8.75% 10 Indianapolis Indiana 7.00% 0.00% 0.00% 7.00% 38 Columbus Ohio 5.75% 1.75% 0.00% 7.50% 34 Fort Worth Texas 6.25% 1.00% 1.00% 8.25% 17 Charlotte North Carolina 4.75% 2.50% 0.00% 7.25% 36 Detroit Michigan 6.00% 0.00% 0.00% 6.00% 45 El Paso Texas 6.25% 1.00% 1.00% 8.25% 17 Seattle Washington 6.50% 3.00% 0.10% 9.60% 1 Denver Colorado 2.90% 1.10% 3.65% 7.65% 32 Washington District of Columbia 5.75% 0.00% 0.00% 5.75% 48 Memphis Tennessee 7.00% 2.25% 0.00% 9.25% 3 Boston Massachusetts 6.25% 0.00% 0.00% 6.25% 43 Nashville Tennessee 7.00% 2.25% 0.00% 9.25% 3 Baltimore Maryland 6.00% 0.00% 0.00% 6.00% 45 Oklahoma City Oklahoma 4.50% 0.00% 3.88% 8.38% 14 Portland Oregon 0.00% 0.00% 0.00% 0.00% 50 Las Vegas Nevada 6.85% 1.25% 0.00% 8.10% 24 Louisville Kentucky 6.00% 0.00% 0.00% 6.00% 45 Milwaukee Wisconsin 5.00% 0.00% 0.60% 5.60% 49 Albuquerque New Mexico 5.13% 1.13% 0.94% 7.19% 37 Tucson Arizona 5.60% 0.50% 2.00% 8.10% 24 Fresno California 6.50% 1.48% 0.25% 8.23% 23 Sacramento California 6.50% 1.25% 0.75% 8.50% 13 Long Beach California 6.50% 2.25% 0.25% 9.00% 6 Kansas City Missouri 4.23% 1.25% 2.88% 8.35% 15 Mesa Arizona 5.60% 0.70% 1.75% 8.05% 26 Atlanta Georgia 4.00% 3.00% 1.00% 8.00% 27 Virginia Beach Virginia 5.00% 0.00% 1.00% 6.00% 44 Omaha Nebraska 5.50% 0.00% 1.50% 7.00% 38 Colorado Springs Colorado 2.90% 2.23% 2.50% 7.63% 33 Raleigh North Carolina 4.75% 2.00% 0.00% 6.75% 42 Miami Florida 6.00% 1.00% 0.00% 7.00% 40 Oakland California 6.50% 2.25% 0.75% 9.50% 2 Minneapolis Minnesota 6.88% 0.15% 0.75% 7.78% 31 Tulsa Oklahoma 4.50% 0.92% 3.10% 8.52% 12 Cleveland Ohio 5.75% 2.25% 0.00% 8.00% 27 Wichita Kansas 6.50% 1.00% 0.00% 7.50% 35 New Orleans Louisiana 4.00% 5.00% 0.00% 9.00% 6 For more on state and local sales tax rates, see our midyear update.
