D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson Awarded for Outstanding Achievement in State Tax Reform in 2014

Washington, DC (Oct. 17, 2014)—Today, the nonpartisan Tax Foundation will present D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson with the 2014 Outstanding Achievement in State Tax Reform award for leading the charge on a comprehensive tax reform bill that balances competing priorities to improve the simplicity, fairness, neutrality, and economic competitiveness of D.C.’s tax system.

As the award’s name suggests, honorees are selected due to their extraordinary efforts to advance the cause of simpler, smarter tax policy in the previous year. The District’s impressive reforms in 2014 stem from a bipartisan blue ribbon commission’s recommendations from earlier in the year. As the reforms phase in, the income tax burden on middle-income earners will decrease, as will the District’s business tax. Additionally, the reforms will eliminated special carve-outs for a number of services and apply the sales tax more broadly and fairly.

“Mendelson’s efforts facilitated the bill’s passage and ensured its integrity while balancing the interests of D.C. residents and businesses,” said Tax Foundation Vice President of State Projects Joseph Henchman. “D.C.’s reforms are some of the most impressive we’ve seen this year and they mark a strong commitment to smarter and more principled tax policy.”

This year, six people will receive the award. Yesterday, the Tax Foundation presented New York Governor Andrew Cuomo with the award for corporate tax reforms in the Empire State. The remaining honorees will be announced next week.
