Job Description

Our work is meaningless if it is unread or unrespected. At Tax Foundation, the Editor is crucial for ensuring our work is accessible, engaging to all our core audiences, and written with the highest possible standard for accuracy and consistency.

The role of the Editor is vital to the Marketing and Communications team as well as the entire organization. TF has several annual publications that are widely read by key decision-makers and cited regularly in top-tier news sites that require meticulous editing of changes in rankings and data, such as Facts & Figures, the State Business Tax Climate Index, and the International Tax Competitiveness Index.

The primary responsibility of this position will be the fulcrum between the work of our policy experts and development (fundraising) teams and honing and tailoring their research and analysis for the various audiences we serve: policymakers, the media, and the general public. This role is the central resource for the staff to bounce questions of grammar and tone and anything related to writing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Editing policy papers and op-eds from the state, federal, and global teams, as well as lengthier research publications put out by those teams.
  • Editing policy blog posts and emails sent by the development team and staff heralding important TF events and weekly emails updating our general readership on tax notes of interest.
  • Collaborate with the Manager of Education and Outreach to edit content that grows the TaxEDU platform, which gives teachers the tools to make students better citizens, taxpayers a vocabulary to see through the rhetoric, and lawmakers crash courses to write smarter laws.
  • Update and maintain the Tax Foundation style guide and make periodic presentations to the staff keying in on various aspects of writing good tax analysis and being better stewards of their own self-editing.
  • Be a general resource for staff to help them improve their writing and self-editing skills.
  • Be forward-thinking and offer creative input on Tax Foundation initiatives.

Highlights of Our Benefits

  • HSA-based health coverage with employer contributions
  • 401(k) retirement plan with 100% match on first 5%
  • 100% of the premiums for dental and vision coverage and life/AD&D/LTD insurance
  • 12 paid holidays and 15 vacation days per year and generous sick leave
  • Office is closed the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day annually
  • Early-release Fridays all year round
  • Work-from-home option Mondays and Fridays for employees in the D.C. headquarters area.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, or related field, with a background in tax policy or economics, would be ideal.
  • 5 years of experience in communications or related field, with an emphasis on good editing.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and convincing way for a wide range of audiences.
  • Good knowledge of communications best practices, tools, and trends.
  • Ability to work independently, with a team, and under pressure.
