In past years, pontificating on the budget process or tax structures was a sure-fire way for politicians to put voters to sleep. But that was before the economy tanked, unemployment jumped and the projected state budget gap widened to $8 billion, in the most recent estimate from the Office of Legislative Services. ...
Polls show voters' top concern is the state's high property taxes, which rank among the highest in the nation. Last year, New Jersey homeowners ponied up 7 percent of their paychecks for property taxes, according to the Tax Foundation, a nonprofit organization in Washington, D.C.
